Hosted by Erik de Haan and Tammy Tawadros

This workshop is part of a trilogy that tracks the flow of time during coaching. It follows on from It follows on from a CPD workshop by Marc Gaudart and Erik de Haan (launched in 2022) called First moments in coaching and another CPD workshop by Simon Cavicchia and Erik de Haan called Working with the present here and now

Coaching best starts with the end in mind. Part of our contracting consists of asking what will be different after successful coaching? And how will we know that we have achieved that difference? How can we address the question of the client, the underlying needs of the client for the future, and the client’s intentions and goals?

In practice future conditions may turn out to be different to how they are at present, or how we anticipate them now. Perhaps current structures are unsustainable. Or planning is inadequate. Or market conditions, resources, or regulations change dramatically. Threats to continuity throw the future into sharp relief for coachees, particularly when the need to change is pressing or urgent.

The unpredictability of the future often eclipse the client’s capacity to reflect- an ability which is necessary, if not essential condition for coaching to be effective. In this session we will explore how coaches can work with clients looking to the future and operating in 'future facing' mode. We will offer participants the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences with the future in coaching and pressures for results. We will introduce more creative ways of working with the future encompassing ways of imagining or hypothesising the future as ‘already present’ during our sessions.

By the end of the webinar, you will have obtained new insights into

  • How to reveal the future within the present.
  • How to move from ambivalence about the future to embracing the full polarity of future options.
  • The coach’s use of self when it comes to the future.
