Countdown is an initiative started by a group of Hult students to help motivate their fellow classmates in their job search. The Hult Career Services San Francisco blog posts mirror these tips of the week while providing more insight. While these posts are timed to meet the needs of our student body, they are relevant to anyone interested in learning more about career related topics.

According to U.S. Department of Labor statistics, it takes the average person six months to find a job during this down economy. This is an average amount of time from the start of the job search to securing employment. Some people will find a job sooner than six months, and will take others longer. There are also several factors that may shorten or lengthen this process, including prior work history, industry/fields of interest, and how much time that person can set aside for tasks related to job search. While it pays to set aside some time to carry out a serious job search, it also can be helpful to work efficiently as well. How much time should you set aside? That will depend on a lot of factors, and results may vary depending on the person. Career Services recommends starting with a figure of a minimum of 30 minutes per day, and adjusting as needed.

The takeaway is that you spend some time on your job search every day , rather than concentrate on spending a larger amount of time once or twice per week. There are several reasons for this:

  1. You are less likely to procrastinate if you break the work into smaller pieces. Think about cleaning your kitchen or bedroom—if you do it on a regular basis, it is a much less daunting task.
  2. Timing is everything. You are more likely to find timely information and act upon it.
  3. Doing something every day requires a regimented schedule. This will require you to partition your work/tasks into steps. This will help organize your job search, and to keep focus on your overall goals.
  4. Keeping a daily schedule will keep your job search “in shape”. Much like trying to keep your body in shape, regular exercise will yield favorable results. Same with your job search—regular work will keep your brain on task, and you are more likely to produce favorable results.
