FAQ for US employers

Hiring international students in the US has many benefits, they bring diversity & inclusion to your company and help with key issues like retention rates. The process of hiring an international student (or F-1 student) is the same as a company would follow to hire a US national. The only difference is that international students can only work while they are studying under CPT (Curricular Practical Training), and when they graduate during their OPT (Optional Practical Training) period, which can last for up to three years.

What is OPT?

OPT is a type of work authorization that allows F-1 students to work in the US for 12 months after graduation to gain work experience related to their major field of study. Most of our programs are STEM, meaning our students can extend their work period for two additional years. This is three years that they can stay working for the same company, which is more than the average time Gen Zs stay in a job.

What does a company need to do to hire an international student on OPT?

The same they would do to hire a US national, provide them an offer letter. With this offer letter, they go to a USCIS office and get their work permit.

Does hiring an international student mean I need to sponsor them?

This is a common misconception, and the answer is no. A company is not required to sponsor a candidate after their OPT period is over. However, in our experience, most companies want to after they see the experience and diverse perspectives international candidates bring.
