Jumping Into Internships: How Sonia Vasnani Made the Most of Her First-Year Summer
Sonia Vasnani, a rising second-year undergraduate student at Hult London, didn’t wait until graduation to begin building her career. Just 18 years old at the time, Sonia secured a summer internship with procurement consultancy, Procure4, and jumped into a role that was far more dynamic than she expected.
We spoke to Sonia about how she landed the role, adapted to the unexpected, and what she’s learned from her first step into the professional world.
Q: How did you discover your internship with Procure4?
Sonia: My older brother interned at Procure4 the year before, and he couldn’t stop talking about the company culture and the responsibility he was given. So, when they reached out to him asking if he knew anyone available from May to August, it lined up perfectly with Hult’s academic calendar. He passed along my CV, and after an interview, I was in!
Q: How did Hult’s career team support you?
Sonia: I worked closely with Dawn, my career coach at Hult. We did several mock interviews, which helped me feel more confident and polished. I also got help tailoring my CV and practiced communicating why I was a strong fit. On top of that, I attended Hult’s CV and LinkedIn workshops, which were super practical and gave me a solid online presence.
Q: How did your Hult experience prepare you for the workplace?
Sonia: The way we’re assessed at Hult is unique. In one project, our team meetings were recorded, and we were assessed on everything—being punctual, having agendas, taking minutes, dressing professionally. At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate it, but once I got into the workplace, I saw how important those details are.
Time management and presentation skills have also been key. Hult really emphasizes those, and I see now how that’s set me up for success.
Q: What’s been the most challenging part of your internship?
Sonia: I was originally brought in for a sales role, but when I joined, the product wasn’t ready to go to market. So, I had to pivot and ended up supporting contract development and doing data analytics, which was completely new to me. There wasn’t much training, so I had to ask lots of questions and learn fast. Being open, adaptable, and collaborative helped me overcome that challenge.
Q: What was your proudest moment during the internship?
Sonia: I was given full ownership of an ESG marketing campaign. I created content for the company’s LinkedIn page, and a few of my posts really nailed the messaging. Marketing and content creation are strengths of mine, so being trusted with that responsibility felt amazing.
Q: What was the biggest insight you took away from the experience?
Sonia: That age doesn’t define your value. I started this role at 18 and felt imposter syndrome at first. But I was treated with so much respect and given real responsibility from the start. It taught me that what really matters is what you bring to the table.
Q: What advice would you give to other Hult students looking for internships?
Sonia:
- Start early, and invest in your skill set—online courses, new tools, communication.
- Be active on LinkedIn. It’s your professional identity, and it can open doors.
- Lean on the careers team. The one-to-one support I got was so valuable, from mock interviews to profile reviews.
Sonia’s story proves that when you combine curiosity with courage and preparation, amazing things can happen—even in your first year.
