The NRG Battle – World Edition is a competition organized during the World Gas Conference in Kuala Lumpur where 100 global top talents work for four days in multidisciplinary teams of five, on challenging cases provided by companies. At the end of the four days, each team presents their idea in a 3-minute pitch to an expert jury, consisting of CEO’s and Directors from the energy sector. The jury nominates three teams that will pitch their idea once more to 5000 delegates at the World Gas Conference, who will then choose the winner of the NRG Battle – World edition.

One of the main reasons why companies participate in the NRG Battle is to find and recruit new top talent. Since 2009 the NRG Battle – Europe Edition has selected over 1000 participants and 53 nationalities from the best universities all over the world to compete. One of the Top 100 students selected to go to Malaysia this year to represent a team from Shell is Hult MBA candidate Filipe Mota Silva.

Filipe and his teammates – comprising of Shell Team 4 – will have to develop a compelling value proposition for offshore LNG development, basing the proposal on customer/stakeholder desires and needs.

Their proposition?

In May 2011, Shell announced final investment decision on the world’s first Floating LNG project at Prelude in Australian waters – the Prelude FLNG Project. Floating LNG (FLNG) will allow Shell to produce, liquefy, store and transfer LNG at sea, opening up new business opportunities for countries looking to develop their gas resources and bring more natural gas to market.

We believe that FLNG will enable the development of gas resources ranging from clusters of smaller more remote fields to potentially larger assets via multiple FLNGs. This can mean faster, cheaper, more flexible development and deployment strategies (including managing hydrocarbon maturation) for fields that were previously uneconomic.

Exactly how attractive is Floating LNG, how does it differ from onshore LNG development? What factors might influence decision making, are these purely economic, or do technical, social or political considerations also play a role?

Follow the road to Kuala Lumpur, Filipe and Shell Team 4 as they compete in the final days of NRG Battle here.
