As the world hurtles towards a staggering 9 billion people and the gap between rich and poor grows ever larger, Joanne Lawrence proposes that leaders need to view business and society as interconnected, with each needing the other to prosper.  Sustainability issues are not just risks to be managed, but opportunities to be realized.  To meet the sustainability challenge will require new business models and new ways of thinking. She’ll share how business can be a transformative force, and illustrate how thinking holistically can improve lives at the same time grow the markets that will enable companies to prosper in the 21st century.

Joanne Lawrence, Professor of Business and Global Society M.B.A., Stern Graduate School of Business, New York University

Joanne Lawrence is a Professor of Practice at Hult where she teaches Business and Global Society and Social Innovation at all campuses in the graduate programs, and oversees the Hult Publishing. She is an academic partner of the UN Development Program (UNDP), has served as an academic co-advisor to the UN Global Compact, and represents Hult as an academic member of the UN’s Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME).

A strong believer in the transformative power of business, she focuses on developing strategic, holistic thinking leaders who can ethically and effectively leverage resources to achieve both social and economic objectives. Current research projects focus on the intersection of social, economic and environmental aspects of business, and on women and diversity issues.

Previously, she was an adjunct professor of strategy and management at INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France and an affiliate of its Business in Society Centre where she was involved in an extensive research study of global corporate responsibility.

With more than 35 years of extensive international corporate and consulting experience, she has worked with multinational companies and global organizations such as BP, IBM and the World Bank as well as smaller, more socially-focused enterprises. As vice president of corporate communications and investor relations, she received numerous awards in both the U.S. and U.K. for her work in strategically-aligning and engaging stakeholders, and was named one of Britain’s ‘Top 20 Corporate Women’ by the Sunday Times of London.

While vice president at UK-based healthcare company SmithKline Beecham (today GSK), she headed a ground-breaking global organizational change initiative that integrated two companies that became the subject of a book and an award-winning INSEAD case study. She later founded her own London-based consultancy which focused on strategically-driven organizational culture change, particularly mergers.

Among her publications are Globally Responsible Leadership: Managing According to the UN Global Com-pact Principles (Sage, 2012) and From Promise to Performance: The Journey of Transformation at SmithKline Beecham (Harvard Business School Press, 1997). Her case study, Sustainability as Opportunity: Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan (Hult Publishing, 2015) won the prestigious Case Centre's Award for Best Case in Ethics and Sustainability in 2018 and was the best selling case in that category for 2017 and 2018. It has also been included in a management education book, Managing the Sustainable Busi-ness (Springer, 2018).
