A delegation of members of the New Zealand Parliament visited Hult International Business School’s Dubai campus as part of the School’s Executive Speakers Series, speaking to an audience of business executives from more than 30 countries. The delegation was led by Metiria Turei MP, co-leader of the Green Party. The other members were Craig Foss MP, Chairperson of the Finance and Expenditure Committee, and Hon Maryan Street MP, opposition spokesperson on foreign affairs and trade, and a former cabinet minister.
Making a short presentation on the contribution of the New Zealand and UAE governments to the development of their people, Craig Foss said that New Zealand had a vibrant economy that had weathered the recent recession well, and highlighted the need for trust throughout all aspects of society as being vital to the attraction of foreign investment. Metiria Turei spoke about managing the environment in the recent global recession. She emphasised the link between the economy and its foundation on environmental quality, and pointed out that poor environmental quality will have a negative impact on any country’s performance in sectors such as tourism and agriculture.
Hon Maryan Street spoke about on the financing of democracy. She stressed the need for transparency in the control of parliamentary and electoral funding, and drew on New Zealand’s experience to show that, though it is a challenge, it could be achieved. The speakers stimulated an intense discussion with an audience each of whom had an average of more than ten years’ business experience, and who are participating in graduate programmes in Dubai.
The context for the visit is New Zealand’s extraordinarily robust trade relationship with the UAE, in sectors such as education, finance, consulting services, agriculture and tourism. The parliamentarians also congratulated the students and the administration of Hult on the recent ranking of the school as among the top 30 in the world by The Economist magazine.
