Musician and Hult San Francisco MDM student Alex Kane is making a new kind of music, and the Hult community has been the first to see it. He has configured an innovative performance style that combines the live shows of a DJ and a band, resulting in an artistic and mesmerizing music experience.

How does it work? Alex plays audio from various instruments – all of which he’s prerecorded himself – that corresponds with video clips. Using an iPad and a laptop as controllers, Alex acts as a DJ and VJ, playing the music as the clips are projected on a screen behind him. It’s like hearing a band while watching a DJ.

Alex debuted his one-of-a-kind show at Hult’s TEDx event in April, and in his final weeks as a student, he is performing an on-campus show for his classmates. The show will be Wednesday, August 1st (12pm) at the Hult San Francisco campus.

Alex is also running a Kickstarter campaign to help him fund a full-length set of his performance style and add more to it, such as more visual and interactive components. The August 1 performance will stream live online for those who have contributed $10 or more to his Kickstarter campaign, and this exclusive audience will be able to offer suggestions via Alex’s Twitter feed, which he will incorporate into the live show.

All the music in these shows is recorded by Alex himself. He plays a slew of instruments, including the guitar, bass, piano, and drums, and has released four albums of original music. You can download Alex’s songs at alexkanemusic.com.
