Leading a revolution in performance and culture

About National Institute for Health Research

Through an award-winning partnership with Ashridge, NIHR and the NHS, research leaders have led a revolution in performance and culture, supporting the UK Government’s ambition to become a world-leader in life sciences, delivering faster and easier clinical research that improves the healthcare of millions of patients every year.

Client: National Institute for Health Research

Sector: Healthcare

Overview: NIHR is the research arm of the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). They wanted help accelerating the pace of medical research and their collaboration with the NHS.

The Challenge

  • Medical research needed to be quicker
  • Simpler and clearer targets wanted for clinical trials
  • Better collaboration across over 60 NHS Trusts in the UK.

“We needed to deliver faster and easier clinical research to support the improvement of the healthcare of millions of patients every year”

The Solution

We worked with NIHR and 64 NHS Trusts on a comprehensive engagement program, to establish a unified sense of purpose, ownership, engagement and accountability across the entire National Health network.

“This is a world of experienced experts and from the outset we were acutely aware that the success of this initiative rested on the credibility of the approach taken. As organization consultants we knew that we had to begin by listening and understanding. “Phil Glanfield, Program Director, Ashridge Hult Executive Education.

The Impact

The program helped both organizations to achieve their goal of faster and easier research. The results include improved efficiency, reduced costs, an increase in the growth and scope of research and – most importantly – more and better treatments for patients, delivered more efficiently.

“This three-way partnership has made an important contribution to the development of an improved quality of clinical research in the NHS, which means faster translation of health research into benefits for patients.” Dr Russell Hamilton, Director of Research and Development, Department of Health.

The program won Gold for Organizational Development at the 2015 European Foundation for Management Development Excellence in Practice Awards.
