{"id":9145,"date":"2017-05-31T09:59:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-31T09:59:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hnews.hult.edu\/?p=9145"},"modified":"2026-05-06T12:27:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T11:27:43","slug":"the-keys-to-effective-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/the-keys-to-effective-leadership\/","title":{"rendered":"What are the keys to effective leadership?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written by Dr. Toby Shephard, Senior Medical Director EMEA region, Pfizer Consumer Health,\u00a0<\/em><em>Executive MBA student at Hult International Business School.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of my proudest \u201cdad\u201d moments was when I heard a story that someone who had previously worked for my dad would give up her job to go and work for him again at the drop of a hat. But what would make her say or want to do that? I can think of a number of reasons, but I have to declare I might be biased!<\/p>\n<p>So, why do we believe in some leaders and not others? Why do we often find ourselves in positions where we just cannot align with our manager or leader?<\/p>\n<h2>Why do we believe in some leaders and not others?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Authenticity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I firmly believe decisions about whether to believe in and align with a leader are related to that leader\u2019s authenticity. This then begs the question what do we mean by the \u201cauthentic\u201d leader? This is a topic that is covered at length in the \u201cLeading with Personal Impact\u201d course on the Global <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/mba\/executive-mba\/\">Executive MBA<\/a> at Hult. On the course, we learn that the authentic leader is someone who \u201cprovides the predictability and consistency to both reassure and motivate followers who find the opposite behaviors unnerving, especially in ambiguous or stressful circumstances\u201d.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>&#8220;In the current VUCA world, it&#8217;s understandable why people can align behind leaders they perceive as authentic.&#8221;<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, the authentic leader objectively evaluates data before making balanced decisions, lives by an internalized moral compass, has high self-awareness and self-management (ie. high emotional intelligence) and openly and appropriately shares information and feelings. Therefore, in the world that we live, which is currently \u201cVolatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous\u201d (VUCA), it becomes more understandable why people can align behind leaders they perceive as authentic.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignleft wp-image-9157 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2017\/05\/IMG_9772-1.jpg\" width=\"2592\" height=\"1728\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>EMBA students on Leadership Immersion at the Ashridge campus<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trust <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another important element of leadership to consider is \u201ctrust\u201d. Why is it that some leaders can command our complete trust and with others, this is a struggle? This is also covered in the leadership courses on the Executive MBA, where trust is broken down into 4 components \u2013 a leader\u2019s: reliability, capability, intimacy, and self-interest. These are combined to make the following \u201cTrust equation\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Trust =(Capability x reliability x intimacy) \/ self-interest &#8220;]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Self-interest<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A \u201creliable\u201d leader will be one whose actions are predictable, consistent, and who delivers what they say they will deliver. A \u201ccapable\u201d leader is one who clearly has all the experience and know-how to do the job. An \u201cintimate\u201d leader shows a genuine interest in understanding their team and how they operate, what motivates them, and generally,\u00a0wants the best for them. For the equation, each of these components is given a score and then multiplied together. The sum is then divided by the leader\u2019s \u201cself-interest\u201d mark.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>&#8220;Authenticity and trust are key drivers to becoming a better person and, with that, I have developed my effectiveness as a &#8216;leader&#8217;.&#8221;<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>From this equation alone it is clear that even with the most capable and highly intelligent leader, if he\/she is perceived by their team as \u2018all about themselves\u2019, then the leader will not be trusted. The less \u201cself-interested\u201d leader, with the same competencies, would be trusted much more highly.
