It makes up the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.intracen.org\/itc\/market-info-tools\/statistics-export-product-country\/\">ninth-most traded product group<\/a> in the world, is worth over $100 billion worldwide, and is one of the most consumed beverages on earth\u2014but you already knew that last part.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"http:\/\/crukafe.com\/\">CRU Kafe <\/a>CEO, founding partner, and Hult International Business School alum, Colin Pyle, found when launching the business in 2013, coffee is a lot more global and in-depth than the instant capsules sitting on countertops worldwide lead us to believe.<\/p>\n<p>As the first segment in a new documentary series about CRU Kafe debuts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/JamieOliver\">on Jamie Oliver\u2019s Food Tube channel<\/a> in April, Hult spoke with the Toronto, Canada native, and serial entrepreneur whiz on his company\u2019s journey to combine delectable coffee with solid ethics, righting the environmental wrongs of the long-standing coffee industry, and how his education and career have put him exactly where he hoped to be: a global citizen leading the global generation.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Colombian Coffee Adventures | Episode 1 | John Quilter AKA Food Busker\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FdgIuR_0lGo?start=4&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p><strong>It all started with throwing coffee pods away morning after morning.<br \/>\n<\/strong>When the patent came off the coffee capsule in late 2012, it prompted the question that Bodil Blain, who would become CRU\u2019s co-founder, along with Colin and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foodbusker.co.uk\/#foodbusker\">The Food Busker<\/a> YouTube star chef, John Quilter, would set out to answer: Why couldn\u2019t there be a more conscious coffee capsule that was good-tasting and better for the environment?<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Coffee pod industry pulls in nearly $14 billion a year in revenue.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>One of Colin\u2019s first jaunts into researching the market produced a staggering statistic: the coffee pod industry pulls in nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/nestle-loses-a-round-in-coffee-pod-fight-1456214403\">$14 billion a year<\/a> in revenue. \u201cSo I thought,\u201d explains Colin, \u201cwith Bodil, who can get us in anywhere, and John Quilter, who brings enormous credibility to the brand as a chef and a product guy, how can I not make this successful? With that market and my two co-founders, I was confident we could make a go of this.\u201d Which led to building CRU\u2019s brand on taste and an environment-focused mission.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-8738 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2017\/04\/KRU-BlogPost1-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"646\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nLike craft beer, chocolate, and ingredients on restaurant menus, the world is becoming a place where customers are demanding more information about products\u2019 origins. Gone are the days where the coffee experience is only about caffeine and convenience.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>\u201cWe want CRU to be recognized as a great-tasting, high-quality product that\u2019s ethical and environmentally friendly.\u201d<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re in a phase of exploring the potential of coffee. We\u2019re more about quality, more about taste, more about provenance, more about different coffee products. We\u2019re called CRU Kafe right now, but we\u2019re building a brand called CRU that will stand for luxury coffee staples\u201d says Colin. \u201cWe want CRU to be recognized as a great-tasting, high-quality product that\u2019s ethical and environmentally friendly.\u201d\u00a0Quickly, CRU set out to improve the entire coffee process from planting to packaging.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-8740 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2017\/04\/KRU-BlogPost1-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"646\" \/><br \/>\nEvery year, billions and billions of coffee capsules, which due to their plastic\/aluminum makeup are difficult to recycle, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/magazine-35605927\">burden the earth<\/a>. \u201cUpon hearing that, I thought, \u2018Let\u2019s do this in a more sustainable way and in a way where everyone wins along the long supply chain. Let\u2019s stop with throwing billions of capsules into landfills every year,\u2019\u201d Colin says.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h2>&#8220;But as much as people want to talk about the importance of environmentally friendly packaging, I&#8217;m not seeing it as a priority in their spending habits.&#8221;<\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The quest to make environmental packaging more affordable and accessible has become one of Colin\u2019s biggest challenges. \u201cIn many places, consumers are prepared to pay more for an organic product, but as much as people want to talk about the importance of environmentally friendly packaging, I&#8217;m not seeing it as a priority in their spending habits. They\u2019d rather save some money and look the other way, which is disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Colin\u2019s undertaking now is to clarify the messaging and marketing around the terms \u2018biodegradable,\u2019 \u2018compostable,\u2019 and \u2018recyclable,\u2019 and eliminate the confusion in the marketplace about what customers are paying for with those terms.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><img class=\"alignnone wp-image-8741 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2017\/04\/KRU-BlogPost1-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"646\" \/><br \/>\nThen the business expanded beyond poured coffee, with a focus on coffee flour and an even bigger focus on the environment.<br \/>\n<\/strong>One of the largest waste by-products in the coffee industry is the coffee cherry, which most people don\u2019t even know is a thing. A quick explanation: Coffee beans are actually seeds within the coffee cherry. As the \u2018beans\u2019 are harvested, the cherry pulp and juices, get discarded. Sometimes the coffee growers put a little bit into fertilizer or compost, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perfectdailygrind.com\/2015\/11\/zero-waste-coffee-5-creative-uses-for-coffee-by-products\/\">over 50%<\/a> of the coffee fruit is discarded, left to rot in landfills and pollute the nearby earth.<\/p>\n<p>Colin and CRU have worked with some farmers to dry the cherry, mill the dried cherry, and the turn it into coffee flour. \u201cAnd so we\u2019re able find a new use for what\u2019s typically a waste product. We can cook with it, it\u2019s got more potassium than bananas, and it\u2019s gluten free. It\u2019s like a super food,\u201d Colin explains. \u201cWe are in the very early stages of building out that supply chain to work with farmers and teach them how to mill the coffee flour.\u201d<br \/>\n<em>Check out a favorite recipe that uses coffee flour <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crukafe.com\/blogs\/recipes\/coffee-flour-muffins\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.<br \/>\n<\/em><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>And if it isn\u2019t already obvious, global citizenship touches every aspect of Colin\u2019s day-to-day.<br \/>\nEven before studying for his MBA at Hult&#8217;s London campus,\u00a0Colin knew, as he words it, \u201cThe world is a global place and my next business needed to be global.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Fundamental to expanding business to all corners of the earth is knowing the right people.&#8221;]<\/p>\n<p>Fundamental to expanding business to all corners of the earth is knowing the right people. \u201cHaving a global network of individuals who I spent six to twelve months intensely working alongside has been amazing, even all these years later. Along with the global career support his classmates have given one another, they have also become close friends. \u201cWhen I went to Bogot\u00e1 for the documentaries, I met up with two of my classmates who I\u2019ve been in touch with for the last four or five years.
