An<\/span> Executive MBA<\/b><\/a> is sometimes mistaken for being a superior version of its better-known counterpart\u2014the<\/span> MBA<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, they’re actually very similar in terms of <\/span>content<\/b>, <\/span>prestige<\/b>, and <\/span>value<\/b> to employers. But the two programs are delivered in different formats, require different levels of commitment, and serve different career aspirations.<\/span><\/p>\n

Comparing course length and schedule<\/b><\/h3>\n

An <\/span>MBA<\/b>, short for <\/span>Master of Business Administration<\/b>, is a general management degree.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are one and two-year programs, but both tend to be <\/span>full-time<\/b> and require you to be on campus. At Hult, our<\/span> Global One-Year MBA<\/b><\/a> is completed over 12 months, with the option of studying on up to three of our<\/span> global campuses<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

EMBA<\/b>, short for <\/span>Executive Master of Business Administration<\/b>, is also a general management qualification.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, EMBA programs are typically done\u00a0<\/span>part-time<\/b>,\u00a0taking between two and four years to complete. The <\/span>Global Executive EMBA<\/b><\/a> at Hult is designed to be flexible, with some students completing the course in as <\/span>little as 18 months<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This full-time versus part-time study schedule is often thought to be the defining difference between an MBA and an EMBA. However,\u00a0<\/span>there are many other differences to consider<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Course structure and student lifestyle<\/b><\/h3>\n

Because of the full-time nature of MBA programs, they require a big commitment in terms of <\/span>a change in lifestyle<\/b>. You will need to take a career break for the duration of the program and, if you\u2019re attending a<\/span> global business school<\/span> like Hult, you may need to relocate to a different country. A full-time MBA is an immersive graduate experience <\/span>that requires total commitment<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

With an MBA, many students <\/span>choose to relocate<\/b> to wherever their school of choice is. But EMBA students are usually in full-time employment, so they are often more restricted when it comes to the location of the school. <\/span><\/p>\n

Our EMBA students tend to<\/span> attend the campus closest to home<\/b>, which\u00a0they can easily travel to once a month.\u00a0<\/span>However, having the option of<\/span> attending multiple campuses around the world<\/b> is often a big benefit for Hult EMBA students who frequently travel abroad for work, or want to gain on-the-ground international experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The flexibility of the EMBA<\/strong> route can mean considerably less impact on your regular lifestyle\u2014although balancing work, personal life, and studies<\/span> does come with its own challenges<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Differences in age and professional experience<\/b><\/h3>\n

One simple difference between an MBA and Executive MBA program is the profile of the students<\/strong>. EMBA students tend to be<\/span> slightly older<\/b>, with\u00a0more years of senior-level professional experience on their resumes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Admissions requirements<\/b><\/h3>\n

As EMBAs are geared towards working professionals with more extensive experience, <\/span>EMBA admissions<\/span> teams look for a <\/span>varied professional background and managerial experience<\/b>. It’s assumed that applicants will already have a certain level of business knowledge picked up over their career, so there is not so much emphasis placed on entrance exams.<\/span><\/p>\n

For most full-time MBA programs, only <\/span>three years of work experience<\/b> is required. However, a <\/span>GMAT<\/b> (or equivalent) score will usually be part of the<\/span> MBA admissions criteria<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Curriculum differences<\/b><\/h3>\n

MBA and Executive MBA programs generally cover the <\/span>same core content<\/b> and aim to develop or advance similar skills. <\/span><\/p>\n

At Hult, MBA and EMBA students engage with the same fundamental topics in their<\/span> core courses<\/b>. Both programs also offer the option of <\/span>specializing by taking electives<\/span> in a particular business area, such as <\/span>marketing<\/b>, <\/span>finance<\/b>, <\/span>entrepreneurship<\/b>, <\/span>project management<\/b>, or <\/span>business analytics<\/b>. <\/span><\/p>\n

On our MBA program, students have the opportunity to apply the theory learned in class through <\/span>practical projects, <\/b>like the<\/span> Hult Business Challenge<\/b>. Our EMBA students take part in<\/span> challenge learning<\/b>\u00a0too. But they also have the opportunity to apply their learning straight away in the workplace\u2014meaning lessons learned have <\/span>immediate professional value<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Career goals<\/b><\/h3>\n

Often, MBA students are looking to make some kind of <\/span>change in their career<\/b>\u2014be it a change of location, industry, or function. Therefore, their focus is firmly on gaining employment upon graduation. At Hult, we are also seeing more and more MBA grads pursuing a career in entrepreneurship and starting their own businesses<\/strong>. The fees for both programs are usually fairly similar, depending on the school and the location of the program. The difference often lies in the options students have for <\/span>funding their degree<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

MBAs are usually self-funded,<\/strong> although there are a wide variety of scholarships and financial aid<\/strong>\u00a0packages available through private companies and the business schools themselves. When it comes to course fees, full-time MBA students must also factor in living expenses<\/strong> and the cost of accommodation<\/strong>, taking into account that they won’t be earning a salary<\/strong> for the length of the program.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, successful MBA grads usually see a fast return on their investment<\/strong>, as their new academic credentials put them in good stead for more senior roles.<\/p>\n

Executive MBAs, on the other hand, can often be funded\u2014either partially or entirely\u2014by their employer<\/strong>. That’s because employers benefit from the skills and knowledge gained, and many are happy to contribute to the professional development of their staff<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Having said that, there is an increasing trend towards EMBA candidates self-funding<\/strong> their degree, with scholarships and financial aid<\/strong> also being available for these programs.<\/p>\n

Employer-sponsored students are generally required to commit a few years to the company<\/strong> upon graduation, so be sure you\u2019re aware of the conditions if this is the route you take.\u00a0Whether employer-funded or self-funded, EMBA students will also be earning a full-time salary<\/strong> while studying, so studying for an EMBA can be somewhat less daunting financially.<\/p>\n
