ONE OF THE least pleasant aspects of a professional\u2019s job is the need to put things in a presentation format and present it.\u00a0 Almost everyone finds it a chore and wishes he were better at it.\u00a0 And many people are told specifically that they need to improve if they want to progress.\u00a0 Look no further.\u00a0For a person who seeks to learn, I\u2019ve put down seven important points below:<\/p>\n

(1) \u00a0Use Pyramid Structure:<\/strong><\/p>\n

How do we remember telephone numbers?\u00a0 We group them. 773-399-0773.\u00a0 Any grouping of ideas is easier to comprehend if it arrives presorted into its pyramid.\u00a0This suggests that every slide should be deliberately structured to form a pyramid of ideas.<\/p>\n

(2) \u00a0Need for Logic:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is not enough simply to group ideas or bullets in a logical way in a slide without also stating to yourself what the logic of the relationship is.\u00a0 This means that instead of remembering bullets, you remember bullet categories into which bullets fall.\u00a0 As a presenter, you are thinking one level of abstraction higher, because thought-transfer is at a higher level.<\/p>\n

(3) \u00a0Order Top Down:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Controlling the sequence in which you present your ideas is the single most important act necessary to presenting.\u00a0The clearest sequence is always to give the summarizing idea before you give the individual ideas being summarized. And, the individual ideas better be well-thought to answer in advance any questions audiences may have. \u00a0In other words,\u00a0first the conclusion – like a newspaper headline – then the beef.<\/p>\n

(4) \u00a0Create an Image to Recite Story:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tell a story.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t tell, at least please do not orally state what is on the slide.\u00a0Audience can read on their own.<\/p>\n

\u201cNear the end of March 1845 I borrowed an axe and went down to the woods by Walden Pond, nearest to where I intended to build my house, and began to cut down some tall, arrowy white pines, still in their youth, for timber..it was a pleasant hillside where I worked, covered with pine woods, through which I looked out on the pond, and a small open field in the woods where the pines and hickories were springing up.\u00a0 The ice in the pond was not yet dissolved, though there were some open spaces, and it was all dark colored and saturated with water.\u201d \u00a0\u00a0– Henry David Thoreau \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

As you took Thoreau\u2019s words, did you not build up a sort of mental picture in your mind, to which you added details as you took in successive phrases and sentences?\u00a0 Malcolm Galdwell (\u201cThe Tipping Point,\u201d \u201cBlink\u201d) is a persuasive orator.\u00a0In fact his presentation at SXSW 2005 is rated on par with Steven Jobs\u2019 Mac introduction of 1984 or Gore\u2019s emotive presentation of global warming.\u00a0People love Malcolm because he is a story teller.\u00a0He doesn\u2019t lecture; he paints a picture.\u00a0 With simple colors.\u00a0 He does more with less.<\/p>\n

(5) \u00a0The Power of Pause:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if you memorize your speech, force yourself to pause.\u00a0 Never utter hmms and aahs. \u00a0Just pause.\u00a0 It\u2019s profound.\u00a0 Even if you don\u2019t lose your breath, please pause.\u00a0 Even an ordinary address seems elegant with the power of pause.<\/p>\n

(6) \u00a0Fail to Plan is Plan to Fail:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Mark Twain once said, \u201cIt takes more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech.\u201d\u00a0 It makes sense to practice your presentation with a tape recorder and in front of a mirror.<\/p>\n

(7) \u00a0Body Talks more than the Tongue:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Use your limbs as you modulate your tone.\u00a0 Be passionate.\u00a0 Stretch your limbs.\u00a0 Ooze energy.\u00a0 Get audience motivated.\u00a0 Walk around.\u00a0 Involve the audience.\u00a0 Leave handouts.<\/p>\n
