I considered my <\/span><span id=\"E40\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">old <\/span><span id=\"E41\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">boss a good manager simply because I liked him and we had things in common. Now, more than halfway through my program<\/span><span id=\"E42\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> at Hult<\/span><span id=\"E43\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, I realize that good management is<\/span><span id=\"E44\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> all<\/span><span id=\"E45\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> about <\/span><span id=\"E46\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">creating the best <\/span><span id=\"E47\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">environment<\/span><span id=\"E48\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> possible<\/span><span id=\"E49\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> for employees<\/span><span id=\"E50\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2014<\/span><span id=\"E53\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">and trusting <\/span><span id=\"E54\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">them<\/span><span id=\"E55\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> to do their jobs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E57\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><span id=\"E58\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Here are four important tips that <\/span><span id=\"E59\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">I have come to understand during the course of my MBA, which\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E60\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">good <\/span><span id=\"E61\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">should <\/span><span id=\"E62\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">managers believe in and put into practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E64\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><strong><span id=\"E65\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">1. <\/span><span id=\"E66\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Build <\/span><span id=\"E67\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Trust<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><span id=\"E70\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">In my <\/span><span id=\"E71\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">pre-MBA <\/span><span id=\"E72\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">experience, <\/span><span id=\"E73\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">senior<\/span><span id=\"E74\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E75\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">managemen<\/span><span id=\"E76\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">t<\/span><span id=\"E77\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E78\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">monitors itself <\/span><span id=\"E79\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">through countless engagement surveys, with a common question being: \u201cDo yo<\/span><span id=\"E80\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">u trust senior leadership?\u201d But senior leaders,<\/span><span id=\"E81\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> in o<\/span><span id=\"E82\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">rder to be effective, also need<\/span><span id=\"E83\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> to be asking<\/span><span id=\"E84\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E85\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> \u201cDo you trust the employees under you?\u201d Since trust is not something that can be easily measured, it is also not som<\/span><span id=\"E86\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">ething easily taught. In fact, it comes from experience. B<\/span><span id=\"E87\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">uilding trust comes from <\/span><span id=\"E88\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">listening to what employees have to say and <\/span><span id=\"E89\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">the willingness to question situations and processes, and if they are not working, rebuil<\/span><span id=\"E90\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">ding them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E92\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><strong><span id=\"E93\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">2. <\/span><span id=\"E94\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Empower<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"E96\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><span id=\"E97\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">The <\/span><span id=\"E98\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Hult <\/span><span id=\"E99\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">MBA program has taught <\/span><span id=\"E100\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">me <\/span><span id=\"E101\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">that <\/span><span id=\"E102\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">delega<\/span><span id=\"E103\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">tion<\/span><span id=\"E104\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E105\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> and allowing people to <\/span><span id=\"E106\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">manage themselves<\/span><span id=\"E107\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E108\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> is the only way to get things done<\/span><span id=\"E109\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E110\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E111\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Self-<\/span><span id=\"E112\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">regulation<\/span><span id=\"E113\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> is important because it allows employees to figure out how to improve a<\/span><span id=\"E114\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> process<\/span><span id=\"E115\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> or a project. One way to encourage this is<\/span><span id=\"E116\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> by allowing peopl<\/span><span id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">e to work on personal projects\u2014<\/span><span id=\"E118\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">something that firms like Google do.<\/span><span id=\"E119\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E121\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><span id=\"E122\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Yet, it is often hard to give people <\/span><span id=\"E123\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E124\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">free time<\/span><span id=\"E125\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2019<\/span><span id=\"E126\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> or allow them to self-regulate when time is precious. But it is essential, because even when companies pay employees well, money is not a big enough motivator\u2014people want to have a sense of purpose <\/span><span id=\"E127\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">in their<\/span><span id=\"E128\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> job. <\/span><span id=\"E129\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">This is why <\/span><span id=\"E130\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">good managers must be willing to pay employees enough to keep money <\/span><span id=\"E131\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E132\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">off the table<\/span><span id=\"E133\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2019 <\/span><span id=\"E134\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">while empowering them (and therefore trusting them) <\/span><span id=\"E135\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">to <\/span><span id=\"E136\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">be innovative and develop an <\/span><span id=\"E137\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">intrapreneurial<\/span><span id=\"E138\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> mindset to <\/span><span id=\"E139\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">create solutions<\/span><span id=\"E140\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E141\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E142\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">We see how important this in our group work at H<\/span><span id=\"E143\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">ult. Because time and schedules are<\/span><span id=\"E144\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> always tight, we need to constantly divide and delegate work so that the early birds <\/span><span id=\"E145\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">and late owls can make their contributions<\/span><span id=\"E146\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E147\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> and <\/span><span id=\"E148\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">we<\/span><span id=\"E149\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> still<\/span><span id=\"E150\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E151\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">make our deadlines. This is especially important when you have<\/span><span id=\"E152\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> people of<\/span><span id=\"E153\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> many cultures and life stages in one meeting room. <\/span><span id=\"E154\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Good managers will empower employees to<\/span><span id=\"E155\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> self-regulate and get <\/span><span id=\"E156\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">their work done<\/span><span id=\"E157\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> on time. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E159\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><strong><span id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">3. <\/span><span id=\"E161\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">Create a Killer Team<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"E162\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E164\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><span id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">I\u2019ve also learned that good managers surround themselves with people that think differently than they do, and who have skills tha<\/span><span id=\"E166\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">t complement their weaknesses. Now, in a<\/span><span id=\"E167\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> traditional view <\/span><span id=\"E168\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">of management, managers<\/span><span id=\"E169\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> reward the hardest workers <\/span><span id=\"E170\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">on their<\/span><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> team<\/span><span id=\"E172\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">s. Yet, I\u2019ve learned this <\/span><span class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">year that it\u2019s important to <\/span><span id=\"E173\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">remember <\/span><span id=\"E174\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">that<\/span><span id=\"E175\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">a <\/span><span id=\"E177\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">team <\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">is composed <\/span><span id=\"E179\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">of all types o<\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">f personalities and styles. For example, individual<\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">s<\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> who are<\/span><span id=\"E183\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> less outgoing<\/span><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">but<\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> work hard to <\/span><span id=\"E188\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">clear roadblocks in the background<\/span><span id=\"E189\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E190\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">can be forgotten among<\/span><span id=\"E192\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E193\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">more extroverted<\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> personalities when<\/span><span id=\"E195\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">the<\/span><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> time <\/span><span id=\"E198\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">comes <\/span><span id=\"E199\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">for promotions. <\/span><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">The<\/span><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> Hult<\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> MBA <\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">program <\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">has taught me to <\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">champion and <\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">defend <\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">those employees who are doing good, essential work, but are not as as\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">visible<\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">.<\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> We see this in our groups while working with the same people in one\u00a0module on every subject. The quiet guy who does not say as much during the marketing project <\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">can suddenly <\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">become<\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> your<\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> team\u2019s <\/span><span id=\"E217\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">ticket to an &#8216;A&#8217; in a finance class<\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><strong><span id=\"E221\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">4. Look At\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">The Big Picture <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-stl-Normal1\"><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">You can always count on l<\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">ittle kids<\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> to<\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> always ask<\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">,<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">why<\/span><span id=\"E233\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">?\u2019<\/span><span id=\"E234\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> But as adults, we can<\/span><span id=\"E235\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> get so caught up <\/span><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">in our busy lives that<\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> we forget to stop and ask why we <\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">are doing<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> something <\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">we\u2019ve always done<\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2014again and again<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">. We forget<\/span><span id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">why we expect people to do things a certain way<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, and <\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">that <\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">our<\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> old, comfortable ways are<\/span><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> not always <\/span><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">the best<\/span><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> ways. T<\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">here is not one<\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">, and only one,<\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> correct framework or st<\/span><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">yle that makes a good manager. In fact, i<\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">t is important to be adaptable <\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">after assessing the needs of employees<\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> and <\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">specific situations<\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">. As <\/span><span id=\"E261\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">emerging leader<\/span><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">s, we need to always ask <\/span><span id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2018<\/span><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">why?<\/span><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">\u2019<\/span><span id=\"E266\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\"> <\/span><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">And, we need to <\/span><span id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-font5-Calibri\">listen closely, be flexible, and establish credibility early.
