This Fall, Hult Boston hosted the first Square One Challenge (S1C) of this academic year. Danielle Remis Hackel, Managing Director of State Street Global Advisors, (the investment management division of State Street Bank and Trust), and KD Waltner, Design Director at Reebok, set their challenge to 120 Master’s of International Business<\/a> and Master’s of International Marketing<\/a> students. Teams had 40 minutes to develop creative and practical solutions to the real-life, current, and strategic challenges faced by these two Boston-based companies. They then had three minutes to present their solution before the company representatives chose the winning team. Students on the State Street Global Advisors winning team were\u00a0Sameer Singh, David Kovacs, Denis Smirnov, Rao Arsland Shahid, Pedro Gabriel La Mantia, and Maryna Goushcha; and the KD Waltner winning team members were\u00a0Abhilash Muttimbaku, Whitney Sims-Rucker, Prashant Murari, Kathrin Schuelbe, Daniela Benzaquen, and ArminakVartanyan.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hult Boston<\/a> also welcomed industry leaders that work at some of the biggest names in the city as part of our \u2018Boston\u2019s Best\u2019 speaker series. The events aim to give students a local perspective on job growth and career paths in Boston, as well as offering the chance to network with business leaders, hear how they got to where they are today, the lessons they learned along the way, and what it\u2019s like to work in the company they are now.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Boston’s Best at Hult Boston<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finance, consulting, marketing, and innovation are some of the strongest industries in Boston and representatives from the leading names in these sectors \u2013 such as Goldman Sachs and Microsoft \u2013 joined us to share their insights and experiences with students.<\/p>\n

Guests this Fall included: Kevin Millsom, Vice President of Goldman Sachs; Brian Carty, Chief Marketing Officer at Steward Health Care System; David Bergers, Managing Director and General Counsel at LPL Financial; and Cathy Wissink, Senior Director of Technology and Civic Engagement at Microsoft.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A student perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n

David Liu, a Master of International Business student at our Boston campus, attended the Kevin Millsom installment of the Boston\u2019s Best series. Kevin has served at Goldman Sachs for over eight years as a Vice President. \u00a0Previously, he worked at Constellation Management Investment Company, Old Mutual Asset Management Company, and Putnam Investments. \u00a0He shared insights into the banking and personal wealth management industries, and his own professional experiences. David had this to say of the event:<\/p>\n

“You get the chance not only\u00a0to talk to people who are successful in their life, but also have an opportunity to know their paths to success, as well as networking with them. Hearing Kevin Millsom talking about the path that he took to become a member in Goldman Sachs, I learned that you do not have to have a consulting background or work experience in consulting in order to get into the consulting firms. The only thing you need is to not give\u00a0up and keep trying.”<\/p>\n

Questions answered, connections made<\/strong><\/p>\n

Each event in the series features a keynote address that focuses on the speaker\u2019s career paths, their experience in the industry, and key tips for students looking to\u00a0pursue opportunities in those fields. Students can then dive deep into the industry and get answers to their questions in Q&A sessions and networking receptions. We keep the events relatively small to preserve an intimate atmosphere and maximize networking potential.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How to ‘Network like a rockstar’<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this year, Hult Boston\u2019s Career Services<\/a> department hosted professional trainer, coach, and author Jaymin Patel<\/a> on campus. \u00a0Over 250 students attended his talk, \u2018Networking like a Rockstar.\u2019<\/p>\n

Jaymin has developed a \u2018science\u2019 behind networking that is framed for the analytical mind of graduate students and helps break down the nebulous concept of networking. He shared tips and tricks collected from dozens of MBAs, undergraduate students, and industry professionals on their journey to get their dream job \u2013 including his own personal successes and failures as a student and recruiter.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Tips for success<\/strong><\/p>\n

In his talk, Jaymin helped students build confidence in talking to anyone and how to \u2018work the room\u2019 with ease and finesse at networking receptions and career fairs. He also gave insights into what a recruiter is really thinking and how they really make decisions. He gave practical tips on clearly articulating their career goals and defining what career success means to them personally, as well as advice on how to identify the right individuals to network with and how to develop lasting personal relationships with influential individuals. The event was a knockout success with students who enjoyed Jaymin\u2019s entertaining style of delivery and the practical nature of his tips that they could start applying straight away.<\/p>\n
