Is it achievable?\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve all called or texted friends and family to ask how they are only to get the reply, \u201cBusy.\u201d Or worse; \u201cStressed.\u201d Burnout is real. Being forever busy is an epidemic of its own. And struggling to achieve work-life balance often feels a losing battle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps we\u2019re partly to blame. We work on our commutes. We work on our holidays (our next-level connectedness means no one is ever really out of office any more.) In the evenings. On weekends, and at times when we should be spending quality time with those most important to us. It\u2019s non-stop. And hands up, I\u2019m scarlet-handed. I\u2019m passionate about what I do and it\u2019s not unknown for my work to extend into unsocial hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>The pressure to be &#8220;always on&#8221;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you miss something? The brief changes? The website goes down? It\u2019s more often than not, fixable. Though we feel pressure not to mess up and to be available within a minute&#8217;s notice. Our desire to succeed can be all-consuming. Of course, no one wants to fail. Yet failure is the exact thing we need to grow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paranoia, humble-bragging, and social media&#8217;s false projection of perfection give us a sense of needing to be always on as well. When actually, to be our full, rested selves the best thing we can do is switch off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>How much responsibility lies with employers?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The saying goes, &#8220;healthy employees make happy employees.&#8221; And, in London, there\u2019s been a huge surge in companies recognizing the demand for a workplace with benefits beyond the expected. Free Friday breakfasts, B2B events on-site so to accelerate the learning curve, yoga classes, kombucha in the fridge now as well as beer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good managers should be open to discussion too. Don\u2019t be shy about asking for their time. Put 1:1s in with them if they haven\u2019t with you. Flexible hours, a later start and finish, a day working from home are modern-day practice for many businesses, but it should become the norm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about the 4-day week? While far from common, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/04\/23\/a-4-day-work-week-results-in-more-loyal-more-engaged-staff.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this is gaining traction too<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/microsoft-4-day-work-week-boosts-productivity-2019-11?r=US&amp;IR=T\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Microsoft\u2019s recent trial in Japan<\/a> netted the company a whopping 40% leap in productivity. US real estate firm Perpetual Garden also tried the 4-day work week experiment. It was so successful they\u2019re reported to have adopted it permanently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In my line of work, a lot of people work from home on Fridays. In no connection to my last sentence, I question how much work really gets done on Fridays anyway. If we\u2019re pushing ourselves all week long, fatigue is inevitable. And if we know we have to get our to-do list done in four\u2014rather than five\u2014days it\u2019s &#8220;carrot on a stick&#8221; logic. You\u2019ll do it. Then, you can enjoy a relaxing, restorative three-day weekend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of the day our employers can help set us up for success, but ultimately they\u2019re a business. It\u2019s down to us to do the same and look out for our own business\u2014ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Managing work-life balance is critical for further progression<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might have to adjust your priorities. Or get better at saying &#8220;no&#8221; gracefully, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rachelmontanez\/2019\/11\/20\/girlboss-ceo-sophia-amuroso-shares-how-she-avoids-burnout-and-how-other-entrepreneurs-can-too\/#48e827b47ed9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as CEO of Girlboss Sophia Amuroso recommends<\/a>. Commit to leaving work on time to get to that gym class. And learn to accept that you can\u2019t do everything\u2014importantly, that\u2019s more than okay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our professional and personal lives have become more entangled than ever before. Relearning how to switch off, adopting boundaries\u2014gradually if need be\u2014and prioritizing self-care stand us in far better stead against burnout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>So, how do we start to organize the chaos and prevent burnout?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try to identify triggers and patterns. Make an effort to notice things that raise your stress levels. It could be that your commute is really hectic\u2014can you switch it up in any way? Could you learn via podcasts? Watch a movie on that long journey so you use the time for you?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planning ahead for busy spells at work\u2014the festive period or summer vacation season\u2014may help too. Including booking in your own time off. As a freelance writer, I\u2019ve found that booking a weekend away or a holiday for some time ahead means I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take time off. I\u2019ve also promised I\u2019ll eat well. It\u2019s a small, obvious step, but crucial. It might be a little Mother Hen, but if we don\u2019t ensure we are fit and well, no-one else is going to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Don\u2019t ignore stress\u2014adopt daily strategies<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some things that I\u2019ve found helpful. Hopefully, some will work for you, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Make your workload visible.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make it clear to your peers what you\u2019re doing and ask them for feedback. Not only will it help you move further, faster\u2014you might also receive positive reassurance you\u2019re on the right track.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><b> Plan even an hour off<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doing something you enjoy. A walk, reading a book, calling that stressed friend for some camaraderie.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><b> Change your work setting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Bizarrely, moving from my home desk to the sofa can help my productivity levels. You have to work out what works for you\u2014and it might surprise you.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><b> Walk around the block. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting fresh air really can change perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><b> How much do you allow interruptions?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s okay not to respond instantly\u2014don\u2019t open yourself up to unnecessary interruption. There are plenty of reports out there to suggest it takes nearly 30 minutes to refocus from distractions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b> Say no<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After all, we can\u2019t do everything, and recognizing that is powerful.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Is work-life balance really achievable?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We might not like to admit that a lot of it is down to us. But with gradual changes and committing to making them, we can do it. A daily multivitamin, committing to that run, making your commute time for reading that book that\u2019s been on your shelf forever.
