Islamic Science drove advances in medicine, mathematics, astronomy, and chemistry. It paved the way for Europe\u2019s and the West\u2019s scientific revolution. &#8221;Nothing in Europe could hold a candle to what was going on in the Islamic world until about 1600,&#8221; notes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2001\/10\/30\/science\/how-islam-won-and-lost-the-lead-in-science.html?module=ArrowsNav&amp;contentCollection=Science&amp;action=keypress&amp;region=FixedLeft&amp;pgtype=article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Jamil Ragep<\/a>, professor of Science History at The University of Oklahoma in an interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Golden Age of Islam \u2013 explained in 10 minutes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Golden age of Islam | World History | Khan Academy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K5XKjk0-hCo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Physicist Jim al-Khalili traces the roots of our understanding of light and optics back to the Golden Age<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe title=\"Science in a Golden Age | Al Jazeera English | Optics: The True Nature of Light | 2015\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/263530482?h=ee8944de00&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Why the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewatlantis.com\/publications\/why-the-arabic-world-turned-away-from-science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arab world turned away from Science<\/a> is not a simple question to answer. But a 2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.unesco.org\/sites\/default\/files\/usr15_the_arab_states.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO Science Report<\/a> cites political turmoil as a leading reason why scientific research remains undervalued in the Middle East and North Africa.<\/p>\n<p>UNESCO report contributor Nazar Hassan notes that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-fanarmedia.org\/2016\/09\/science-needs-respect\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scientific success is needed<\/a> in the region for economic prosperity as well as to <strong>attract native<\/strong> <strong>talent back to the region.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Hult Executive MBA makes science his business<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/mba\/executive-mba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hult London Executive MBA<\/a> alumnus and Egyptian National <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/omar-shoukry-sakr-phd-mba-96181519\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Omar Sakr<\/a> is leading the charge to democratize scientific research across the MENA region. Omar, who holds a PhD. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Geneva, recognized the need to attract native scientific talent back to the region. \u201cEgypt and the MEA region are known more for e-commerce and finance ventures, while science is not a major industry where I come from\u201d he says. \u201cMany of my fellow scientists wanted to return home to the region after their studies but were unable to due to the lack of cutting edge research facilities.\u201d For years, Omar explains, research remained captive in poorly equipped labs and seldom outsourced to Europe, leading to low-quality results. So he decided it was time to step in.<\/p>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>Democratizing scientific research across the MENA region<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Omar\u2019s company, <a href=\"https:\/\/nawah-scientific.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nawah Scientific<\/a>, makes innovation accessible to those in and around Egypt through its high quality online research laboratory service. Over the last four years they\u2019ve analyzed more than 20,000 samples across nine countries, including for 32 universities. The test is set up via Nawah Scientific\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nawah-scientific.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>. A courier collects the sample from the client. Nawah\u2019s team carries out the analysis and then posts the results in the online portal. \u201cIt\u2019s like a shopping experience. Until then I had spent all my time in the lab. I had no finance or accounting or managerial experience. And now just a year after graduation we\u2019re expanding rapidly, opening new hubs in the Gulf area and North Africa, tripling revenues year-on-year, and expecting to raise <strong>~$5M by mid-2020<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Omar honed his soft skills through Hult\u2019s leadership and management courses. He got up-to-speed on business management through electives in operations, team management, and psychology. \u201cI learned some great ways to optimize efficiency. I remember my very first lecture at Hult: it was all about the perception of feedback. We didn\u2019t understand it at first. But ultimately we learned that feedback is not something that should affect your ego. This was a great lesson in becoming coachable. And investors love that. I learned to <strong>listen more and argue less<\/strong>. Even recently I received some feedback that I\u2019m very coachable and I can attest this quality directly to that first lesson I had at Hult. At the end of the day, feedback can be irrelevant or relevant. He made the most of Hult\u2019s practical curriculum, focusing on his startup at every opportunity. \u201cI leveraged class power and group power to help me from every angle. I approached every challenge with my work and my startup in mind. The collaboration at Hult is second to none. My fellow students were very high caliber &#8211; CEOs, VPs, entrepreneurs &#8211; from all different backgrounds and industries. And rotating to Hult\u2019s other global campuses means you gain even more insight. We were initially refused seed capital. I started crowdfunding through friends and family so that I could produce the numbers to prove that it was a viable business idea. This is currently lacking in the region.
