But renewable \u201cclean\u201d energy sources provide <strong>little to no<\/strong> greenhouse gas emissions. They also bring none of the negative health impacts associated with coal and gas plants, such as breathing and heart problems, cancer, and neurological damage. But with the global rise of populism and world leaders\u2019 refusal to act, our chances of avoiding disaster may seem weaker than ever. Unsurprisingly, the countries with the most developed infrastructure and capabilities to harness renewable energy <strong>will be the global leaders<\/strong> of the future.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/dominicdudley\/2019\/01\/11\/china-renewable-energy-superpower\/#4539cfa7745a\"><strong>China<\/strong><\/a><strong> on target to become renewable energy superpower<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><iframe width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZSRg-hMYi9Q?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Faced with the facts, it\u2019s easy to lose hope. But many at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/mba\/\">Hult International Business School<\/a> are determined to see this as an opportunity for meaningful change. Here is a quick look at a few of the amazing things our people are doing <strong>in the field of renewable energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Students on a mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/mba\/executive-mba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Executive MBA<\/a> student <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/abdullah-al-mansoob-b2608160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abdullah Al-Mansoob<\/a> passionately believes in a better future. Already a successful entrepreneur after founding a customized hardware business, Abdullah came to Hult to realize his dream of building the world\u2019s smartest clean energy exchange. And so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.genr8.io\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genr8<\/a> was born &#8211; a <strong>decentralized peer-to-peer energy exchange platform.<\/strong> Specifically for renewable energy systems such as solar, water, and wind, and transforming the energy sector with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/planetblockchain.io\/interviews\/interview-with-genr8\/\">blockchain technology\u200a<\/a>along the way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m Canadian but originally from Yemen,\u201d says Abdullah \u201cI visited Yemen in 2016 and was really surprised as our flight came in to land &#8211; it was just solar panels as far as the eye could see. There had been no diesel or gas coming into the country for over a year. This was their <strong>method of survival<\/strong>.\u201d This sparked Abdullah\u2019s interest and led him to start thinking about bringing all the renewables under one roof.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18555\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18555\" style=\"width: 1500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img class=\"wp-image-18555 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genr8-renewable-team.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genr8-renewable-team.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genr8-renewable-team-500x333.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genr8-renewable-team-518x345.jpg 518w, https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genr8-renewable-team-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/blog\/media\/uploads\/2019\/05\/genr8-renewable-team-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Genr8 team hard at work in their Dubai office.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><strong>A happy coincidence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOne of my reasons for coming to Hult was to take this idea to the Hult Prize.\u201d Abdullah continues \u201cAnd that year [2018] they announced that the challenge was renewables \u2013 everything was falling into place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah was introduced to classmate and fellow Genr8 team member <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/aitoraguirregabiria\/\">Aitor Aguirregabiria<\/a>. \u201cHe is a remarkable, super smart and humble person. He was working at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dewa.gov.ae\/en\/customer\/innovation\/renewable-energy\/mohammed-bin-rashid-al-maktoum-solar-park\">Mohammed\u00a0Bin Rashid Solar Park<\/a> in Dubai (the biggest in the world) and had heaps of experience. I\u2019d been following blockchain since about 2012. I love the transparency of the technology. And how you can cut out the middle man and create a fraudulent-free way of seeing and spending information. He understood energy, I understood blockchain, and we knew we could work together. Then Aitor introduced me to classmate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mathapelo-mzizi-2ba0909a\/\">Mathapelo Mzizi<\/a> (working in Marketing at Ericsson.) Mathapelo is talented in her field and could make our offering appealing. We knew we had a great team to enter the Hult Prize and take Genr8 to the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A steep learning curve<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWe spent literally all our time preparing. We won the first round and this paved the way to more interest and more success. I learned to be really persistent but to balance this with flexibility. And Hult has been so supportive the whole way through. Everything here is so practical \u2013 I\u2019ve used <strong>every course and every assignment<\/strong> to create a plan to further the business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Genr8 explained<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>A peer-to-peer energy exchange promoting clean energy neutrality in deregulated electricity markets around the globe. Simply put, Genr8\u2019s app allows you to buy or transfer energy instantly at the tap of a button. This platform does not only empower users to earn incentives for being green but also builds a community where green energy users can interact with each other.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hult Prize opens doors<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Abdullah says that the special thing about the Hult Prize is the gathering of like-minded people working together on an important goal. \u201cIt is a very humbling experience. To see so many committed and passionate people connecting to work towards a better world. It\u2019s not so much a competition but more a gathering of great ideas. And the Hult Prize enables those ideas to gain ground. The accumulation of all of them together is actually where the real change happens.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hult Prize gave us credibility on top of the practical experience, and after the first round, we had a lot of keen investors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We rejected around $500,000 USD from one of the biggest blockchain providers because we fundamentally disagreed with their blockchain consensus protocol &#8211; it\u2019s bad for the environment. Due to my past business ventures, I am able to ensure that our principles can take priority. I see the future now as more and more people understanding the various issues that we have. It\u2019s increasing in the public consciousness and more resources are becoming available. I\u2019m passionate about tackling these pressing problems and about everyone coming together to solve them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Once Genr8 needs less of me I\u2019m going to turn my attention to water &#8211; maximizing its recirculation and minimizing waste. I believe wars of the future will be fought over water rather than oil. It\u2019s ok if it\u2019s not me who solves it but I feel there should be a lot more entrepreneurs working on this issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Professors with a vision<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Omar Romero-Hernandez<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hult Professor of Operations Management &amp; Sustainability for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/mba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global One-Year MBA<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/masters\/international-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master of International Business\u00a0<\/a>programs at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hult.edu\/en\/locations\/san-francisco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hult\u2019s San Francisco campus<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/omar-romero-hernandez-41134825\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Omar <\/strong><strong>Romero-<\/strong><strong>Hernandez<\/strong><\/a> is on a mission to transform his home country of Mexico. One of his focuses is to help Mexico transition to a low carbon economy. Their aim is to inspire greater social and economic investment in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To date, Omar has presented his findings and recommendations at the Mexican Congress for its members, as well as the President of the Energy Commission. He joins seminars and events, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.org\/events\/north-american-carbon-price-roundtable\/\">North American Carbon Price Roundtable<\/a>. This summit brought together government officials, corporate executives, and policy experts from Canada, Mexico, and the United States. They discussed how the three countries can integrate climate change policy and move toward a common carbon price for the North American continent.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Matt Gitsham<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Hult Undergraduate, MBA and Executive faculty Professor <strong>Matt Gitsham<\/strong>, Director of the\u00a0Ashridge Center for Business and Sustainability at Hult International Business School, has worked tirelessly on business and sustainable development for over a decade.
