Student Life

Q1: Do I need a student visa?
All international students require a student visa, except EU/UK citizens.

Q2: What clubs and organizations do you have?
Hult has a Student Council – the voice of the entire student body - which, along with the Dean of Students, organizes a range of cultural and social activities. Any Hult student is eligible to run for office, positions of which are elected in the Fall. Hult Students also have access to the University of London Union (ULU), just a five-minute walk from our campus. ULU offers over 30 sports clubs, a work out studio, a gym, and the largest swimming pool (33 meters) in central London. You will also have access to clubs and activities run at ULU. For full details of what the union has to offer please visit their website www.ulucube.com.

Q3: How much do I need for personal expenses?
The amount of money you will need depends on your spending habits. We recommend around £60-£90 per week - this should easily cover your food, travel and entertainment expenses.

Q4: Do I need to open a bank account? How would I do this?
Depending on how long you are planning on staying in London, you may or may not need to open a bank account. If you plan to be here for more than one semester we suggest you open a bank account. Upon request Hult will issue you with a letter for the bank stating that you are a student. If you take this letter to the bank you should have no problem opening a student account.

Q5: How or where do I change money?
There are many places in London to change money. You can use small private companies, American Express shops or banks. Exchange rates do vary so it may be best to look around before you exchange any large amounts of money. Exchanging money is a very simple process. Simply take your cash to one of the above places and they will calculate the exchange rate and provide you with sterling - this generally takes less than five minutes. ATM's are all over London and the majority will accept cards from around the world. ATM's usually give the best exchange rates but do double-check.

Q6: How far is downtown London?
We are downtown! Russell Square, one of the largest and most beautiful garden squares is in Central London and minutes from the British Museum and Oxford Street. Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery and Piccadilly Circus are all about a 15-minute walk from our campus.

Q7: What athletics do you offer?
Hult per se does not offer any athletics. However, Hult students have access to the University of London Union, which offers over 30 different sport clubs, a gym and an Olympic-size swimming pool.

Q8: Do I need a car?
As we are located in Central London there is no need to have a car. Public transport is fantastic in London. We are located close to tube stations (Russell Square stop is closest to campus) and numerous bus routes.

Q9: What should I bring with me?

  • Credit Cards - useful but use with care!
  • Debit/ATM Card
  • Document Folder to keep relevant documents:
  • Valid Passport and student visa (and a photocopy)
  • Copy of offer letter, visa letter and scholarship letter and other materials sent to you by Hult and receipts of payment for all fees.
  • Your medical records and certified copies of academic transcripts, educational work or work qualifications that you may have completed.
  • Electricity - the standard voltage throughout UK is 240V, 50Hz. Plugs have three-square pins and adaptors are available.
  • Food - the Halls of Residence is self-catering. Cooking facilities, pans, plates, cutlery etc. are provided. However there are plenty of places to eat nearby if you do not want to cook (not recommended as it can be expensive). We have a small cafeteria on campus and you can also use the UCL catering outlets that are reasonably priced.
  • Linen - sheets and bedding are provided. Towels are not provided.
  • Medical Insurance - If your program of study is six months or longer you are entitled to free healthcare from the UK National Health Service. Students studying at Hult for less than six months should ensure they have adequate medical insurance.

  • Other personal items - you might find it useful to bring a battery operated alarm clock, a small sewing kit, medical prescriptions and most definitely, an umbrella!

Q10: How often do students go home to visit?
There is no set amount for how often students go home. It generally depends on how long a student is going to be in London. If a student is just visiting for one semester, they usually do not go home to visit. If students are here on a full degree program, they will usually visit at Christmas and in the summer.

Q11: Should I buy a laptop at home or wait until I get to the UK?
You can purchase a laptop either here or at home. But please be aware the U.K. runs on 220/240 voltage. For laptops it is better to buy a whole new power cord adapted for Britain than to use the original power cord with a converter/adaptor. It is also best to compare prices for laptops in your home country and in London.
