Data Strategy and Visualization

We are living in an age of information overload. Large amounts of data are generated by humans, computers, and instruments, and much of the data is available on the internet. Today’s big challenge is not about generating data, but how to analyze them. This course covers the basic theories of data visualization, such as data types, chart types, visual variables, visualization techniques, structure of data visualization, navigation in data visualization, color theory, and visualization evaluation. Students will look at tools such as Tableau and Google Charts and discover strategies for simplifying data overload and learn visual representation methods and techniques that increase the understanding of complex data and models.

Data Mining for Business Intelligence

This course explores the concepts and techniques of data mining, a promising and flourishing frontier in database systems. This course covers data mining tasks like constructing decision trees, finding association rules, classification, and clustering. This course is designed to provide students with a broad understanding of the design and use of data mining algorithms.

Data to Insight: Quantitative Skills in the Era of Big Data

Data collected by organizations, and available at our fingertips, is growing exponentially. But the ability to extract insights and predictive patterns is lagging – creating a large premium for individuals with the ability to understand, interpret, and communicate data. For example, as a student, you may be interested in predicting your salary based on your performance (GPA, etc.) and historical data from your peers. As an investor in financial markets, you may want to predict the future price of a stock based on information about company and industry performance. Data to Insight is an introduction to data-driven thinking and statistical techniques to understand relationships using mathematics. This course focuses on fundamental statistical techniques to build skills in discovering and communicating insights. We use data visualizations designed to teach these skills quickly, and introduce the basic concepts needed to start understanding our world through data.

Quantitative Methods for Management

This course focuses on solving business problems with the use of data. Participants should gain an understanding of how the utilization of modern computational techniques can lead to better decisions by managers and entrepreneurs. This course introduces various statistical methods with a lecture and case-based instruction. This course aims to differentiate between qualitative and quantitative analysis, to develop the ability to structure decision-making, and to explore the use of statistical and quantitative methods to better balance risks.
