Joanne Lawrence is Global Professor of Business & Society, oversees Hult’s publishing initiative, serves on the school’s Research and Research Ethics Committees, and is a principal in the Centre for Business and Sustainability. She recently served as an academic co-advisor to the UN Global Compact LEAD Program. A strong believer in the transformative power of business, she focuses on how leaders can ethically and effectively leverage resources to achieve both social and economic objectives.
Previously, she was an adjunct professor of strategy and management at INSEAD and an affiliate of its Business in Society Centre, where she was involved in an extensive research study of global corporate social responsibility. Her international corporate and consulting experience includes working with global organizations such as BP, IBM, and the World Bank as well as smaller, socially-focused enterprises. As vice president of corporate communications and investor relations, she received numerous awards in both the U.S. and U.K. for strategically-aligning and engaging stakeholders. At UK-based SmithKline Beecham (today, GSK), she headed a ground-breaking organizational change initiative that became the subject of a book, an award-winning INSEAD case study, and a “best case” study of strategic communication. She later founded her own London-based consultancy focused on strategically-driven organizational culture change, particularly focused on merger integration, and was named one of Britain’s “Top 20 Corporate Women” by the Sunday Times of London.
