Dean’s Report on Hult in China
China is in a dramatic transition –from a traditional to a modern society, from a socialist to a market economy. This
transition has created sharp contradictions between theory and practice. Effectively, the “peasant-proletarian alliance” has given way to government courtship of an affluent middle class. “Socialist values” have been eroded by profit incentives and materialistic ends. The “egalitarian dream” has been shattered by vast disparities in wealth. Despite the “abolition of private property,” capitalist ventures peacefully coexist with state-run enterprises. Business activity flourishes within a state that has yet to whither away.
This is the China that belies the spectacle of modern high rises, cutting edge architecture, massive freeways, and
gigantic Olympic stadiums. It is the China that Hult students will discover during six weeks of intensive study in Shanghai.
This year’s Hult in China Program has been eye-opener for seventy-one Hult MBA students. It has featured five electives
taught by several outstanding professors:
- Jay Zif, “New Product Development”
- Yael Zif, “Leadership in the Global Village”
- Lloyd Tanlu, “Financial Statement Analysis”
- Patrick Courtin, “International Negotiations”
- Rob Anthony and Fudan University visiting
professors, “Doing Business in China”
The program has also featured field trips to the Asian offices of major multinationals, participation in trade fairs and
industrial exhibitions, networking with Chinese executives, interaction with local government officials, speeches by
Communist Party leaders, and a myriad of rich and rewarding cultural events.
To date, Hult students have been the honored guests of the Municipality of Changzhou, a city with a population of
Chicago’s that few Westerners have even heard of. They have visited the local offices of several Fortune 500 companies. They
have participated in seminars led by senior executives, dabbled in basic Mandarin, experimented with Chinese acupuncture, dined on a Huangpu River boat cruise, and discovered how to make dumplings. Many have mastered the art of barter, savored Shanghai street food, trekked across the Great Wall, and learned how to survive in places where English is neither written
nor spoken.
The learning objectives of the Hult in China Program are five-fold:
- First, to enable Hult students to experience first-hand life in a major emerging market
- Second, to expose them to Chinese business practices
- Third, to allow them to network with Shanghai business executives
- Fourth, to immerse them in the Chinese culture
- Fifth, to teach them how to navigate in a foreign country
Having witnessed the progress made by Hult students during the first two weeks of the program, I can confidently say that these objectives have been, or soon will be achieved.
Hult students in Shanghai are not only smart, but also magnanimous. Toward assisting families afflicted by the devastating Sichuan earthquake, they recently sponsored a fund-raising event at the EF Mega Center in downtown Shanghai. During the event, they staged a candlelight vigil, sang songs that they had composed in memory of the victims, and created a commemorative video, soon accessible on You Tube, and at
www.hult.edu.
Central China earthquake tremors were felt as far away as Shanghai. On the day of the earthquake, Hult students at the EF Mega Center were evacuated from the building as a precaution.
Based on student feedback, I can honestly say that the Hult in China Program has been a resounding success.
Hult in China is about business education in a globalized world. It is about experiential learning, cultural
immersion, social understanding, and personal growth in a key emerging market. It is about receptivity to novel ideas,
adaptability to a dynamic economic environment, professional development, new adventures, and self-discovery. It is about
realizing who we as educators are, actualizing what we as an institution aspire to be, and fulfilling the School’s mission of
forging the international business leaders of tomorrow.

Hult partners with Keystone to provide career advisory services to all Hult’s global campuses
On April 18, 2008, Hult announced its partnership with Keystone Partners, a leading career management company headquartered in Massachusetts and with offices in 45 countries.
Hult's student body represents more than 30 countries. Addressing the special needs of such diverse professionals requires career management services which are particularly equipped for their circumstances and their career goals. The knowledge and global footprint of Keystone uniquely position themselves to bring both talent management expertise and local market knowledge to all the Hult campuses. Partnering with Keystone significantly enhances Hult’s career advisory and placement capability beyond Hult’s current organizational structure.
“Achieving significant career advancement is the major reason why students choose to study for an MBA. It is essential for a successful business school to support its students in their job search and adequately prepare them to meet the needs of MBA employers. As Hult expands, it is important that our ability to place students keeps pace with the growth of the School” says Dr. Stephen Hodges, President of Hult International Business School.
With the partnership with Keystone, Hult’s Global Career Services team will be primarily focused on corporate development and bringing employment opportunities to the students. Each campus, Boston, Dubai and London, will have a team responsible for reaching out to local employers and coordinating the posting of job opportunities, mailing of resumes and arranging interviews with students. All job opportunities will be available to all students no matter which campus they are enrolled in. This will give Hult’s students access to the global job markets.
Robin Nurse, Hult’s Director of Global Career, formerly with INSEAD, will be heading the Global Career Services team at Hult to work with alumni, industry and business leaders to offer supplemental training and career related programs to facilitate Hult MBAs to become more competitive.
“This is a major step in transforming Hult into a world-class business school. The new approach fits with our entrepreneurial attitude and I believe will significantly improve the service offered to students.” says Dr. Hodges.

Hult Announces Full Scholarship in Honor of Alumnus Patricia Escudero
The Alumni Affairs committee invites prospective MBA students to apply for a scholarship which honors the memory of Patricia Escudero, a Colombian-American alumnus from the class of 2000. Through the efforts of her classmates, the Patricia Escudero Memorial Scholarship will provide full tuition funding for one outstanding candidate for the September 2008 intake. The winning candidate may choose either the Boston or Dubai campus. To be eligible for the scholarship, MBA candidates must submit their complete application and a scholarship essay to Hult by May 15th. See full application details below.
When she first came to the United States from Colombia in 1985, Patricia knew two or three words of English. By 1992, she realized the American dream. Patricia raised her right hand and was sworn in as a United States citizen. She loved this country and returned to it full time after living in Colombia from 1993 to 1999 where she worked for several companies including Colgate-Palmolive.
In August of 1999, Patricia Escudero enrolled in the Arthur D. Little School of Management, now known as Hult International Business School, in Boston to pursue her Master's degree. She had dreams of starting her own business. The goals she set in life kept her going. Shortly after joining the program in the fall of 1999, Patricia was diagnosed with cancer. She continued to attend classes throughout the fall and spring, juggling study and class assignments with radiation and chemotherapy sessions. She was determined to complete the program, despite the hardship.
Patricia’s impressive strength and perseverance served as role model to many. Her dedication to her teammates, and the class as a whole, brought light and life to all those around her. Nonetheless, in July of 2000 Patricia succumbed to the disease. She was three weeks short of graduating. Though she did not walk through graduation with her classmates, she was granted the degree posthumuously.
In her last week, she decided that she wanted to be away from all the hospitals and be in pleasant surroundings. She loved to travel, so she and Ana Maria took a trip to Aruba. Patricia's goal was to see nice sunsets and sunrises, and put her tired body in the crystal blue waters of Aruba's beaches. She knew it would be her last vacation and her final days were spent in pleasant surroundings on her terms. She died where she wanted to be.
The Scholarship honors the memory of Patricia Escudero, who remains in our hearts and continues to teach us lessons in our own lives.
As Patricia was known for her dedication to her studies despite great obstacles, the scholarship will be awarded to an individual who demonstrates tireless commitment to academic, professional or personal achievement in the face of adversity.
Scholarship Criteria
This scholarship is available to accepted applicants for the September 2008 intake and who meet the following requirements:
- Must demonstrate strong academic achievement while overcoming obstacles

- Submit their complete application for the Hult MBA program by May 15th. (This is the date by which all application materials must be received by the Admissions Office.)

Hult takes over Huron University in London
Hult International Business School announced that through an agreement orchestrated through President Dr. Stephen Hodges and the Board of Huron University on Nov 30, 2007, Hult is officially taking control of Huron University, adding its fourth location to Hult’s global network.
The takeover will give Hult a prominent presence in Central London as well as extending the School’s global reach from Boston, Dubai and Shanghai to the commercial and financial capital of Europe. The School plans to reorganize and re-brand Huron’s business degrees (which are fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges) and create new and exciting ‘specialization opportunities’ for Hult students worldwide.
“Hult will capitalize on the competitive advantage of each major campus location to offer different specialization,” said Dean Richard Joseph of Hult International Business School.
In future, Hult students admitted to Boston, Dubai or London will spend 9 months in their respective home campuses for their core courses and will have the opportunity to rotate to another campus located in a major business centre in another country on a different continent. This unique global campus rotation is an integral part of Hult’s international MBA experience which allows students to gain insight into the world’s key economies.

Hult marks its official launch in the Middle East with a press event in Dubai Knowledge Village
Hult International Business School’s arrival in Dubai was officially conveyed to the media on Monday, November 5, at a press conference held in Dubai Knowledge Village. Hult International Business School is the first U.S. accredited business school to establish a one-year MBA program in Dubai.
Hult Academic Dean Rick Joseph began the proceedings by outlining how Hult is creating the world’s first truly global business school. To demonstrate the school’s global perspective, he delivered his speech in both English and Arabic.
Michael Barnes, Dubai Academic Dean, then outlined the Hult global vision, showing clearly how the school provides students with a “global MBA, not just in name, but in practice." He added, “I believe that the opportunity to study for a world-class MBA in one of the most dynamic cities anywhere will be attractive to students from around the world. Already we have received applications from students from more than 30 nationalities."

Our guest of honor was Dr. Ayoub Kazim, the executive director of Dubai International Academic City (the future home of the Hult campus) who spoke about how Dubai is positioning itself to be the major commercial and educational hub in the region, and demonstrated the importance of diversity in education. Dubai Knowledge Village is already home to students from more than 70 countries and prides itself on this international mix. He applauded Hult’s move into Dubai: “We welcome Hult International Business School to the fastest-growing city in the region and we expect demand to be very strong for the excellent, international MBA program that Hult offers."
The final speaker of the day was Rohina Hayat, a Hult alumna from the class of 1990. Rohina is now the vice president of risk management at the National Bank of Pakistan. She delivered a speech on her experiences with the program, highlighting that even back in 1990, the focus of the program was on practical business training, delivered to a truly global student body.
After the speeches were completed, the attending press were invited to pose questions to the speakers. Questions came from a range of media representatives from Dubai and across the GCC region. These included daily newspapers, student magazines and mainstream Gulf business publications.

Hult International Business School expands to the Middle East and Asia
October 1, 2007, Boston. Hult International Business School, the top-ranked one-year MBA program headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, has announced that it will be opening two new locations in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Shanghai, China.
Hult International Business School is the first U.S. accredited business school to establish a one-year MBA program in Dubai. Hult’s new Middle East campus, which is accepting students to its fall 2008 program, is located in Dubai’s Academic City. The curriculum and quality of Hult’s Dubai program will be identical to the MBA offered at Hult’s top-ranked Boston business school. Hult International Business School has been ranked the 33rd best business school in the world and the 21st best in the U.S. by the Economist Intelligence Unit.
Dr. Ayoub Kazim, executive director of Dubai International Academic City, applauds Hult’s debut in Dubai, “We welcome Hult International Business School to the fastest-growing city in the region and we expect demand to be very strong for the excellent, international MBA program that Hult offers." The head of the school’s Dubai campus, Dr. Michael Barnes, added, “I believe that the opportunity to study for a world-class MBA in one of the most dynamic cities anywhere will be attractive to students from around the world. Already we are seeing interest from students as far away as Tokyo."
In addition, Hult has announced that it will offer elective modules on a satellite campus in Shanghai, China. Hult MBA students will be given an option to do their electives in Shanghai for up to three months as part of a campus rotation program.
“The world is increasingly interconnected, with a single global economy emerging. Here at Hult, we recognize the importance of giving our MBA students a truly global perspective as well as providing exciting career opportunities in the world’s fastest growing economies. For these reasons, we are opening a new campus in Dubai and offering students the opportunity to take elective courses in Shanghai,” says
Dr. Stephen Hodges, president of Hult International Business School.

Study in Shanghai as part of the Hult MBA experience
Take advantage of a unique opportunity to earn a top U.S. MBA degree and also experience China, the world’s fourth largest economy.
Recognizing the importance of a truly global perspective and the exciting career opportunities that are available in the world’s fastest growing economies, Hult announces that its top-ranked one-year MBA program will now include an option for a six-week module in Shanghai, the commercial hub of China. Now Hult students have the chance to experience two world-class cities, Boston and Shanghai, within a single one-year MBA program. In addition, students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the business practices and cultures of both America and China.
“China is a critical market to any person in business, regardless of his or her industry,” says Dr. Stephen Hodges, president of Hult. “Each and every person working in international business should have an understanding of the world’s fourth largest economy.”
Thus Hult has added a component to its international MBA program that allows students to experience China firsthand while pursuing their U.S. MBA degree. The experience includes:
- Elective courses from Hult professors which count toward the MBA degree
- The option to study Beginning Mandarin, which would be useful in business and travel situations
- Networking events with local Chinese professionals
- Seminars featuring business leaders in Asia.
This experience will give Hult MBA students an opportunity to get a feel for the market and business practices, make contacts within the country and explore business or employment opportunities. Whether students intend to work in Asia or not after the MBA, this experience in China will give them a critical advantage.
According to Greg Ruf, CEO of MBA Focus, a company which provides MBA talent to top companies, anyone who has spent time in China and knows something about it, and also has an MBA from a top U.S. school “can pretty much write his or her own ticket.”
For students joining Hult in September 2007, the study abroad module in Shanghai is offered at no additional cost. Students will not pay any additional fees beyond the normal MBA tuition. Housing, courses and travel will be covered.
Hult is now accepting applications for September 2008. Contact the recruitment director for your region to find out more about this dynamic program.

Hult Student becomes finalist for "AMBA Student of the Year" organized by AMBA.
The Association of MBAs (AMBA) hosts
an annual competition for “AMBA Student of the Year," which
seeks to recognize exceptional MBA students who have demonstrated
a talent for leadership and have shown potential as future ambassadors
of the MBA. This year, Hult has nominated Momtchil Kovatchev,
class of August 2007, for the award. Momtchil has made it into
the second round of consideration and has been short-listed
to interview at AMBA’s offices in London on May 9, 2007.
According to the nomination committee, Momtchil is a strong,
engaged player in the classroom and beyond. He is all about
substance. With a commitment to deepening the discussion
and facilitating the growth of the program, he is a clear leader
who has already made his mark at Hult.
Momtchil’s immediate qualifications include excellence in
his work in the MBA program. He is a strong student across
all academic disciplines and he is well on his way towards
graduating with distinction in the top 10 percent of the MBA class.
Fellow students likewise acknowledge Momtchil’s service-oriented attitude and exceptional talents, as they elected him
to represent them as a member of the very active Hult Student
Association.
An important accomplishment of Momtchil's, which is sure to
endure, is that he founded the Hult Marketing Club. Through
the club, he has dedicated himself to gaining greater access
to marketing events for the Hult community and greater visibility
for the school. His first act was to reach out to the American
Marketing Association, leading to an event where Google's
Senior Manager of International Marketing was engaged to speak
to the student population. The AMA's local chapter also decided
to hold a board meeting at the school.
Momtchil's current performance at Hult reflects deep roots
as a leader. While in Bulgaria, he started a charitable association
called "MOGA," which compensates for a weakness he
perceives in the national education system by helping students
create career opportunities following graduation. Now he aims
to gather the best knowledge in a top MBA program and implement
it in Bulgaria to help accelerate the country's progress
and redevelopment as a new member of the EU.
Congratulations to Momtchil on the nomination and for being
recognized by AMBA as an outstanding student among his peers.
We wish Momtchil the best of luck as he progresses to the next
round of interviews.

Hult announces Aparna Kumar of Mumbai, India, as the recipient of the Patricia Escudero Memorial Scholarship
Hult International Business School announces Aparna Kumar of Mumbai, India, as the recipient of the Patricia Escudero Memorial Scholarship for the September 2007 intake.
"Don't give up, no matter what" has been the motto that has kept Aparna Kumar going and has led her to where she is today. Raising their family in rural India, Aparna's parents taught
her the importance of education, despite the cultural notion that "males were considered a blessing and girls a burden."
When she was a child, Aparna's family moved frequently due to her father's job as an Army officer. She learned new languages, coped with new cultures and survived through traumatic
experiences, which could have interrupted her education. In her high school years, she witnessed the road clearance of constant landmines planted by militants and the aftermath of massacres
and terror attacks. Moreover, Aparna once had to prepare for exams while one of her teachers was missing during Hindu-Muslim riots.
Although Aparna received pressure to stay close to her family upon completion of her high school education, her drive for education brought her to Punjab University where she studied
Economics, English and Political Science. In the summer of 2000, a day before her final examinations were to take place, Aparna was diagnosed with a severe infection and was advised against
traveling to her test center approximately 70 miles from her home. Despite the severity of her infection, her determination pushed her to study all night in her hospital bed with her
mother's help. She proceeded to travel the long distance against the advice of the medical experts. Pain ridden, Aparna completed her exams in 10 days and on the last day, she went immediately
into surgery.
In spite of this difficult beginning, Aparna graduated from the program successfully and went on to work in marketing for the Times of India and subsequently for APG Personnel & Security.
She dreamed throughout her professional career of continuing her education and particularly of pursuing an MBA in the United States. While her financial situation was a major constraint,
Aparna held onto her goal and persevered in exploring ways to realize her dream.
"Had it not been for Hult and the guidance I received, there is no way I could have achieved my dream to pursue my MBA studies," says Aparna, who joined Hult's September 2007 intake.
She hopes to work in management consulting upon completion of her studies.
The Escudero Scholarship Committee chose Aparna for the spirit and determination she has demonstrated throughout her academic and professional career. Martha Whyte, alumni affairs director
says, "Aparna's story struck a chord with the committee members, who remembered Patricia Escudero's drive and persistence to complete her goal. Her determination to continue with her education
despite a lack of familial or cultural support, and her ability to see her way through to the finish despite numerous obstacles, brought to mind this same spirit."
The scholarship was made possible through efforts of the Class of 2000, in memory of their classmate Patricia Escudero. The foundation is managed by a steering committee formed by alumni
of the Class of 2000, staff from the school and independent members.
About Patricia Escudero
The Patricia Escudero Scholarship honors the memory of a Hult alum from the class of 2000. Patricia Escudero was an immigrant from Colombia who demonstrated incredible dedication to her
MBA studies and her dream of a U.S. education. Even in the face of incredible personal adversity and life-threatening illness, Patricia stayed committed to her studies and in doing so, inspired
her classmates and school community.

Hult AMBA accreditation official: First U.S. MBA recognized by prestigious international accreditators
Hult International Business School's one-year MBA program earned the accreditation of the Association of MBAs (AMBA), making Hult the first-ever business school in the United States
to be recognized by the prestigious international accrediting body. The official notification, anticipated since the AMBA visit to the school in October, further enhances Hult's international
standing in the global business community.
Long accredited as an institution by NEASC, Hult will now enjoy all the benefits and privileges of belonging to the elite club of AMBA-approved programs including INSEAD, London Business School,
IMD,HEC, IESE, ITAM and ESADE. The AMBA website will now prominently display Hult information and Hult is free to incorporate the AMBA logo in its materials. In addition, the AMBA accreditation enables
Hult to participate in Financial Times rankings for the first time in the school’s history.
Based in the United Kingdom, AMBA is one of the top three MBA accrediting bodies in the world. Since 1967, it has worked to ensure that MBA programs around the world uphold the highest standards
in business education. When evaluating an MBA program for accreditation, AMBA considers the following factors: the strategy and mission of the institution; the size and academic credentials of the faculty;
the professional experience, academic achievements and diversity of the student body; the curriculum; the assessment of coursework; and other resources such as language training and physical facilities.
“We are extremely proud to be recognized for the quality of our international MBA program," said President Lynne Rosansky. “The AMBA committee was especially impressed by the diversity and professional
backgrounds of the Hult student body as well as our innovative Action Learning curriculum.

Hult's spring on-campus corporate recruiting event ended with overwhelming success
In the first of what promises to be an exciting recurring event, the Hult Career Services team recently brought 10 brand-name companies to the school in an exciting round-robin recruiting event. Companies represented at the event were Deloitte Consulting, Deloitte & Touche, IMS Health, KLR Executive Search, Liberty Mutual, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Putnam Investments, Stop & Shop, TalentBurst and Tata Consultancy.
After a private reception, the human resources representatives from these major companies set up shop in the atrium at the school. For the next two hours, students from both the August and December 2007 graduating classes had the opportunity to speak directly with these key company contacts about possible positions, hiring practices, corporate culture and just how their expertise might fit with the companies' objectives.
Students could be seen moving from table to table, having narrowed down their personal list of companies and listening to the questions others were asking of the recruiters. One company present had made an offer to a current student earlier in the day, and their representative was busy fielding questions from quite a crowd of eager potential applicants ready to join their classmate.
The human resources representatives were all impressed with the presence of the Hult students, their self-confidence and the range of remarkable backgrounds in evidence. Clearly our student body is not the average American university MBA class, and it showed in the course of this event. No wonder one executive has called the school a source of ‘exceptionally talented managers who are well prepared to support the corporate world at every level.

Hult celebrates International Education Week
Hult International Business School joins other educational institutions, as well as a variety of organizations and governmental agencies in celebrating International Education Week 2006
from November 13-17. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, International Education Week was established "to promote programs that prepare Americans
for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States." Hult International Business School considers international
education and engagement to be one of the cornerstones of its institutional mission and welcomes the opportunity to highlight this commitment during the seventh annual observance of the week.
